Since its inception in 1902, Baptist Medical Centre (BMC), Saki has stood as a beacon of quality healthcare in the Oke-Ogun region of Oyo State. Established by the Nigerian Baptist Convention’s Southern Baptist Mission, the Centre’s evolution reflects the dedication of missionaries, indigenous leaders, healthcare professionals, and the communities it serves.
1901–1902: In 22 November 1901, Revd Duval came to Saki through the American Southern Baptist Mission. He was later joined by Miss Davey, Miss Donath, Rev. and Mrs. Powell. This was during the reign of Okere Oyedokun I.
He settled and started his preaching station at a hill site, Okeboji, in 1902 with the assistance of Rev. D. O. Toogun and Olaosebikan. Rev and Mrs. Duval started a dispensary in their home in May 1902 in order to cater for the converts.
1909: This humble beginning was later expanded to a bigger size with the addition of 4 rooms that made OPD, a resting room, laundry and consulting/counselling offices to enhance patient care capacity.
1939–1945: The arrival of trained nurses such as Miss Amanda Tinkle and Miss Mannie David strengthened clinical services.
1952: With support from the Foreign Mission Board, the modern Baptist Hospital officially opened, significantly upgrading medical infrastructure and services.
1969: All missionary doctors and nurses left due to the civil war. Mr. T. A. Ogunjimi, a nurse, managed the centre.
Under Chief Dr. Fatunla’s (first indigenous Chief Medical Director) visionary leadership, BMC, Saki transitioned from a modest 40-bed facility to a 200-bed referral hospital. His tenure saw recruitment of specialized medical personnel and an elevation in academic stature, including appointments at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan.
Through him, Chief Dr. E. R. Villaflor a Filipino was employed in 1980
Dr. Ojebode’s leadership spearheaded the establishment of the School of Medical Laboratory Technician (SMLT) and significant infrastructural developments, including educational facilities and enhanced access roads, solidifying the Centre’s educational and clinical capabilities.
